Icon of the Montenegrin Coast on a Peninsula
Sveti Stefan is one of the most recognizable places on the Adriatic coast — a former fortified fishing settlement perched on a small peninsula, connected to the mainland by a narrow causeway. Terracotta rooftops, stone streets, and lush Mediterranean greenery make it one of the most photogenic destinations in Montenegro. On either side of the causeway stretch two sandy beaches with characteristic pink and reddish sand. Nearby are Vila Miločer, the former summer residence of the Karađorđević dynasty, and several monasteries — Praskavica, Duljevo, and Raževići.

Highlights

A narrow causeway connects the former fortified 15th-century island settlement to the mainland, and the combination of terracotta rooftops and turquoise water is one of the most iconic sights on the Montenegrin coast. With its houses dating back to the 15th century, stone shores, and lush Mediterranean vegetation, this is undoubtedly the star attraction of the entire Montenegrin seaside. Today the historic core of the island is home to the luxury Aman Sveti Stefan resort, and the view from the main road above the causeway remains one of the most photogenic shots in all of Europe.

On either side of the causeway leading to the peninsula stretch two sandy beaches — East and West. The sand is a characteristic pink-reddish colour, which visually sets them apart from most Adriatic beaches. The beaches are open to the public for a fee during the summer season and offer a direct view of the historic peninsula, making them unique along the entire riviera. They are ideal for a morning swim before the crowds build up.

The former summer residence of the royal Karađorđević dynasty is located in the immediate vicinity of Sveti Stefan, surrounded by a manicured Mediterranean park and pine forest. The villa is an example of elegant interwar architecture and one of the most attractive locations on the Budva Riviera. Adjacent to the villa is Miločer Beach, known for its clean sea and peaceful atmosphere, which was long reserved exclusively for resort guests.

Built in the 11th century, Praskavica Monastery is one of the oldest sacred sites on the Budva Riviera. Its name comes from the local word for peach, and it is nestled in dense Mediterranean greenery above the sea, just a few minutes' drive from Sveti Stefan. Nearby are also Raževići Monastery, founded in the 13th century, and Duljevo Monastery, known for its homemade goat's milk products. This trio of monasteries forms a cultural and spiritual route well worth visiting for anyone wishing to explore the historical heritage of this part of Montenegro.

Just next to Sveti Stefan, below the main road leading to Petrovac, lies Crvena Glavica with seven smaller beaches of varied character. The beaches are sandy with a mix of fine pebbles; some are suitable for families, and some are occasionally used by nudists. They are less well-known than the main beaches by the causeway, making them a peaceful alternative during peak summer days. Access is possible by sea or via paths from the main road.
