May Day Assembly in Knjaževac

The Prvomajski sabor in Knjaževac is Andrijevica's revived May Day folk assembly, held every 1 May in the historic Knjaževac grove — the park that has served as the town's traditional gathering place for generations. The sabor is part of a broader revival of Andrijevica's assembly traditions, alongside the town's restored 13 July sabor.

Andrijevica occupies a green shelf above the Lim valley with the Komovi massif on the horizon, and the Knjaževac grove is its most cherished common ground — mature trees, open grass and a long habit of gathering. On the first of May, the grove does what it has always done.

A sabor is the old highland institution of the open-air folk assembly: a day when the whole community — and anyone passing through — converges on a shared green space to eat, sing and spend the day together. The Knjaževac edition follows the formula faithfully, with live music, traditional food and an unhurried family-picnic rhythm under the trees.

The charm lies precisely in its simplicity. There is no stage-managed spectacle; the point is blankets on the grass, generations mixing, and a spring day marked the way it was for the townspeople's grandparents. For visitors, it is an authentic window into northeastern Montenegro's social traditions.

Visitors are received as neighbours rather than tourists: bring something for the blanket, accept what is offered from the next one over, and the afternoon takes care of itself. As a window on how the highlands celebrate — without tickets, fences or timetables — it could hardly be improved.
