DEUS — the December Arts Scene (Decembarska umjetnička scena) — is Podgorica's month-long winter season of culture, organised by the Capital City. Now a long-established tradition, it reached its 33rd edition in 2025, and the 34th follows from 1 to 29 December 2026, typically filling the darkest month of the year with around twenty programmes.
December changes the rhythm of Montenegro's capital. Podgorica spends much of the year living outdoors on its squares and cafe terraces, but in the darkest weeks the energy moves inside — into theatres, halls and galleries — while the streets take on their festive holiday glow. DEUS is the city's answer to winter: a deliberate concentration of culture at exactly the time of year when the evenings are longest.
The formula is breadth: theatre, music, literature, film and visual arts all share the December calendar, spread across the city's venues. The 2025 edition opened with the first International Festival of Theatre Direction "Jagoš Marković" (1–6 December), a festival-within-a-festival honouring one of the region's celebrated directors, while the 2024 edition featured "Days of Japan".
For visitors, DEUS is the easiest way to sample Podgorica's cultural life in one trip: on almost any December evening something is on, from concerts and exhibitions to readings and screenings, and the programme changes character from night to night. You can drop in for an evening or build a whole winter itinerary around the season, and because the venues sit across the compact city centre, moving between them on foot is simple.
Most events are free of charge, making it a natural companion to the city's New Year market season. The festival is annual, and the 2026 edition runs from 1 to 29 December at venues across Podgorica; the detailed schedule is announced by the Capital City ahead of each December.
