Stara varoš and the Sahat kula

Stara varoš was the heart of Podgorica during Ottoman rule from 1474 to 1879. Narrow cobblestone streets, čardaci (traditional balconied houses), and Ottoman architecture make this quarter the most authentic part of the city. The central symbol of Stara varoš is the Sahat kula (Clock Tower) on Bećir-beg Osmanagić Square, erected in the 17th century and one of the few buildings to have survived the repeated bombing of Podgorica during World War II. Today, Stara varoš is also a tourist and entertainment hub with numerous cafés and restaurants, including the restaurant Pod Volat right next to the tower.

Ancient Duklja

Duklja is an archaeological site of an ancient Roman city dating from the 1st century AD, located just 4 km from the centre of Podgorica. Christian settlements, a basilica, and churches were already built here in the 4th century, making it one of the most significant late-antique sites in the Balkans. The remains of the burial inventory found at the site are kept in the Podgorica City Museum, while some of the most valuable items are housed in the Russian Hermitage Museum. A visit to the site pairs perfectly with a trip to the City Museum.

Cathedral of the Resurrection of Christ

The Cathedral of the Resurrection of Christ is one of the most impressive sacred buildings in the Balkans and the third largest Orthodox church in the world. Its dome ranks among the largest in Orthodoxy, second only to the dome of St. Isaac's in St. Petersburg. The cathedral dominates the modern part of Podgorica and is just as impressive inside as it is outside, with rich mosaics and frescoes. Entry is free and a morning visit is recommended when the light is at its most beautiful.

Sastavci — Confluence of the Ribnica and Morača

Sastavci is the point where the Ribnica river flows into the Morača, one of the favourite excursion spots for Podgorica locals and the historic heart of the city. Here stands an old Roman bridge considered the oldest in Podgorica, and nearby are the remains of the 15th-century Ottoman fortress of Ribnica. This natural and historical site offers a pleasant riverside walk, far from the city bustle, and in summer it is a popular spot for a refreshing dip. It is just a few minutes' walk from Stara varoš.

Gorica Park

Gorica Park is a 15-hectare city park situated on a gentle slope above the very centre of Podgorica, founded in 1907. It is surrounded by the representative buildings of the Montenegrin state — the Government, the Parliament, and the rectorate of the University of Montenegro. The park offers pleasant walking paths with views over the city and the mountains beyond, and is particularly attractive in the early evening when Podgorica lights up below. It is the ideal place to rest between sightseeing the city's attractions.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Spring (April–June) and autumn (September–October) are the ideal periods with pleasant temperatures. Summer is very hot — temperatures can exceed 40°C — but the city is lively. Winter is mild and well-suited to cultural visits without tourist crowds.
Podgorica Airport (TGD) is 12 km from the centre and receives direct flights from most European cities. Podgorica can also be reached by bus from Belgrade, Sarajevo, and all Montenegrin cities. It is well connected by road to the coast (Budva ~60 km, Bar ~65 km).
1–2 days are sufficient for the city itself. If you plan day trips to Lake Skadar, the Morača Canyon, or ancient Duklja, we recommend 3 days. Podgorica is also an excellent base for day trips to the coast or the mountains of the north.
Be sure to visit Stara varoš with the Sahat kula, ancient Duklja (4 km from the centre), the Cathedral of the Resurrection of Christ, and Sastavci at the confluence of the Ribnica and Morača. Nearby are Lake Skadar (19 km) and the Morača Canyon.
Podgorica is one of the safer European capitals. The hospitality of its residents is a well-recognised characteristic of the city. The standard precautions you would apply in any city are more than sufficient.
