Prokletije Trail is a September trail running weekend in Prokletije National Park near Plav — the "Accursed Mountains", the wildest and most jagged range in Montenegro. The 2026 edition runs on 18 and 19 September.
Runners choose between three courses of 10, 29 and 50 kilometres, all carrying ITRA points. The distances ladder neatly: the 10-kilometre race suits recreational runners wanting a taste of Prokletije terrain, the 29-kilometre course rewards experienced trail runners, and the 50-kilometre race is a full mountain challenge in a range whose serrated limestone walls live up to their ominous name.
The September date is part of the appeal. By mid-month the summer heat has broken, the crowds have gone, and the Prokletije valleys around Plav and its glacial lake are at their quietest — race weekend doubles easily as an autumn mountain holiday in one of the least-visited corners of the Balkans.
The races start from the Plav side of Prokletije National Park, and entry fees apply per distance. For anyone who has raced Montenegro's better-known Durmitor and Bjelasica events, Prokletije Trail is the wilder next step.
