The International Sculpture Symposium in Danilovgrad has run since 1972 and holds official status as a "manifestation of special significance for Montenegrin culture." Its raw material is local: the white Maljat marble quarried near the town, which international sculptors carve in open-air studios each edition.
Visitors can watch works take shape — dust, chisels and blocks of white stone under the open sky — and then see where they end up: the symposium has built a permanent sculpture park over its five decades, an outdoor museum that grows year by year. An artist residency hosts the invited sculptors during their stay.
The symposium is also a forum for ideas: in 2024 it convened the international conference "Contemporary Sculpture," gathering 17 sculptors and theorists from six countries. That mix of hands-on stone carving and critical discussion is rare anywhere, let alone in a small Montenegrin town.
Attendance is free — both the open-air studios during the symposium and the sculpture park at any time of year.
