על האירוע

Every 19 January, on the feast of Epiphany, Podgorica gathers at Sastavci — the confluence of the Ribnica and Morača rivers below the old Ribnica fortress — for the Swimming for the Holy Cross (Plivanje za Časni krst), one of Montenegro's most striking winter traditions. The capital is otherwise a city of quiet winter routines and cafe mornings, which makes the intensity of this riverside gathering all the more memorable.

After the liturgy and a procession to the riverbank, dozens of swimmers plunge into the icy Morača and race roughly 33 metres to reach the Holy Cross thrown into the water — the distance symbolising the 33 years of Christ's life. The swimmer who retrieves the cross carries the honour for the year, and the moment the cross is lifted from the river is the emotional peak of the morning.

Thousands of spectators crowd the banks beneath the fortress walls, breath steaming in the January air, cheering the swimmers through the freezing water. There is something elemental about the scene: the echo of the liturgy still hanging in the air, the grey winter river, and swimmers cutting through water cold enough to make the crowd wince on their behalf.

The mix of solemn ritual and raw physical courage, staged at the very spot where Podgorica was born between its two rivers, makes this a uniquely powerful morning. It is a tradition rather than a show — spectators are guests at a living ritual, and the atmosphere on the banks reflects that, warm and communal despite the cold.

Attendance is free; dress warmly and arrive before the liturgy ends to find a viewing spot near the confluence. The swim is held every year on 19 January at Sastavci in Podgorica, and the whole event unfolds over a single morning, leaving the rest of the day for the old fortress above the confluence and a long, warming coffee in the city's cafes.
