Salon "13. Novembar" is the oldest juried national exhibition of contemporary art in Montenegro, held since the 1960s and reaching its 46th edition in 2024. It takes place at the Montenegrin Art Gallery "Miodrag Dado Đurić" in Cetinje, timed to the celebration of the city's Capital Day on 13 November — the date that gives the salon its name.
Each edition, a jury selects works by Montenegrin contemporary artists, making the salon the annual snapshot of the country's art scene — what its artists are producing right now. For anyone curious about Montenegrin art, that makes a visit uniquely efficient: instead of piecing a picture together from scattered shows, you see the year's currents gathered in a single exhibition, chosen and hung with a jury's eye.
The Grand Prix is among the most watched national art awards of the year; in 2024 it went to Abaz Dizdarević. The award gives each edition its story, and the winning work becomes a talking point that carries well beyond the gallery walls.
Housed in the gallery named after Dado Đurić, one of Montenegro's greatest painters, and set in the museum-dense heart of the old royal capital, the salon rewards an unhurried visit: a single exhibition that doubles as a survey of Montenegrin art today. Cetinje wears November well — cool mountain air below Lovćen, low stone houses, museums at every turn — and the salon slots naturally into a slow day of gallery-going through the old capital.
The timing adds a civic warmth. Capital Day brings Cetinje's celebrations onto the streets, and the salon is the art world's contribution to the occasion, a tradition the city has kept alive across generations of artists. Visiting in that week means seeing the exhibition while the town around it is in a festive mood.
The salon is held annually; the coming edition runs from 13 to 30 November at the Montenegrin Art Gallery "Miodrag Dado Đurić" in Cetinje. Entry is free throughout the exhibition's run.
