关于活动

Every 26 June, Kotor celebrates Boka Navy Day — the feast of the Bokeljska mornarica, a maritime brotherhood with twelve centuries of history whose culture was inscribed on UNESCO's Representative List of Intangible Cultural Heritage in 2021. For one day the Old Town belongs to its sailors, and the heart of the celebration is Trg od oružja, Kotor's main square.

Trg od oružja is the largest square of the walled town, opening just inside the main sea gate and ringed by stone palaces and café terraces. On an ordinary June day it hums with visitors; on Boka Navy Day it becomes a parade ground, and the crowd gathers early along its edges to watch a ceremony that has outlived empires.

The day's central ritual is the handover of the city keys: the mayor of Kotor presents them to the admiral of the Boka Navy, symbolically entrusting the town to its oldest institution. Navy members in full historic uniforms, carrying traditional weapons, then dance the circular kolo on the square — the same slow, dignified round that has marked Boka ceremonies for generations.

A parade follows through the city gates and the streets of the walled town, historic dress and naval banners against a backdrop of Venetian stone. Find a spot near the gates to watch the banners pass at close range, then follow the procession through the lanes at walking pace. In the evening a gala academy honours the brotherhood, its history and its role in the life of the Bay of Kotor.

The Boka Navy is no re-enactment society: it is a living institution whose membership passes from generation to generation, tied to the seafaring identity of every town around the bay. Watching its unhurried kolo — arms linked, circles turning on the stone — is watching the Boka explain itself without a word.

The whole celebration is free and easy to catch — everything unfolds within the compact Old Town, a few minutes' walk end to end. Late June also means long daylight and warm evenings, so the day pairs naturally with a swim or a waterfront walk before the gala academy closes the programme, making this one of the most atmospheric single days to be in Kotor.
