Highlights

The walls and tower of Besac Fortress are relatively well preserved despite centuries of exposure to various weather conditions. The fortress was built in the 15th century as one of the key defensive strongholds of the Balšić dynasty, who ruled Zeta during that period. Since 1957, the site has been legally protected as a cultural monument of Montenegro. From its strategic position on a hilltop above Virpazar, one of the most impressive views of Lake Skadar opens up, making the fortress one of the most attractive landmarks in the surrounding area.

From the walls of Besac Fortress, a panoramic view unfolds over Lake Skadar — the largest lake on the Balkan Peninsula, two-thirds of which lies in Montenegro and the remainder in Albania. The lake is renowned for its extraordinary bird habitat, floating water lilies, and island monasteries. The view from the fortress encompasses the steep mountains surrounding the lake and the shoreline dotted with fishing villages. Morning hours are ideal for photography, as mist over the lake adds an extra visual dimension.

Along the shores and islands of Lake Skadar stand numerous medieval monasteries built between the 13th and 15th centuries — Monastery Kom, Monastery Vranjina and Monastery Beška. All are known for their well-preserved frescoes and fairytale-like settings amid the lake landscape. Organised boat tours departing from Virpazar frequently serve these monasteries, making access straightforward even for independent visitors. Combining a visit to Besac Fortress with these monasteries provides a complete insight into the cultural and religious heritage of this part of Montenegro.
