Montenegro fits two climates into one small country: a Mediterranean coast with long, hot summers and an alpine north where snow can linger into May. Whenever you come, one of them is at its best.

The four seasons

Spring

The greenest time of year. Waterfalls at full flow, valleys turning green, and empty trails before the summer crowds.

  • 15–22 °C in the lowlands
  • Waterfalls and green valleys at their peak

Summer

A classic Adriatic summer on the coast, while the mountains stay pleasantly fresh — ideal for beach and hiking on the same trip.

  • Coast: 28–32 °C air, sea around 25 °C
  • Mountains: a pleasant 20–25 °C

Autumn

The connoisseur's season — a warm sea, golden forests and quiet towns without the crowds.

  • 18–25 °C on the coast
  • The sea stays warm for swimming into October

Winter

Snow turns the north into ski country, while the coast stays mild and rainy.

  • Ski season in Kolašin and Žabljak roughly Dec–Mar
  • Coast: mild and rainy, 8–12 °C

What to pack
Practical tips

What to pack

Montenegro's terrain changes fast, and the weather changes with it — pack for altitude as much as for season.

  • Layers for the mountains all year round — evenings are cool even in July.
  • Sun protection in summer: a hat, sunscreen and plenty of water.
  • A light rain shell in spring and autumn, when showers pass through quickly.
