Kotor sits at the head of the Boka bay, wrapped by steep mountains that trap heat and moisture. Summers are warm and Mediterranean rather than scorching, with July highs around 31°C and the sea climbing to a swimmable 25°C, peaking at 26°C in August. Sunshine is generous, close to 14 hours a day at midsummer.
The same sheltering mountains make the bay the rainiest stretch of the Montenegrin coast in winter, when November brings around 15 wet days. Winters stay mild, though, with January highs near 12°C, so the walled old town rarely feels truly cold.
