Pljevlja lies in the far north of Montenegro at relatively high altitude, giving it one of the country's most continental climates. Summers are moderate, with July highs around 27°C and cool nights, under long days of over 13 hours of sun. The heat rarely becomes oppressive.

For sightseeing, monasteries and the surrounding countryside, come from June to September, when highs reach 24–27°C and summer offers the most reliable weather. July and August are warmest. Autumn is the driest season and pleasant for exploring, while winter is cold and snowy across the northern uplands.
Pack light summer clothing with a warm layer for cool evenings, as even summer nights are fresh at altitude. Spring needs a rain jacket, and winter calls for a heavy coat, hat, gloves and snow boots for cold, snowy conditions.
