The Crown of Montenegro's National Parks
Durmitor National Park, located in northwestern Montenegro, is one of the most impressive mountain areas in the Balkans. The park encompasses the main Durmitor massif along with the canyons of the Tara, Draga, and Sušica rivers, covering an area of 39,000 hectares. With 48 peaks above 2,000 metres, 18 glacial lakes, and the canyon of the Tara River ranked among the deepest in Europe, Durmitor offers natural spectacles rarely found in one place. Declared a national park in 1952 and inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1980, this is a destination that attracts hikers, skiers, rafters, and lovers of unspoiled nature throughout the year.

Highlights

Crno jezero (Black Lake) is the largest of Durmitor's 18 glacial lakes, situated at 1,418 metres above sea level, just 2.5 km on foot from the centre of Žabljak. It consists of Veliko (Great) and Malo (Small) jezero connected by a narrow channel, surrounded by dense Montenegrin forest and mountain peaks. The trail around the lake is 4 km long and ideal for all ages, with educational boards about the park's flora and fauna placed along the way. In summer, swimming and fishing are possible in the lake, while in winter its surface freezes completely — the frozen lake surrounded by snow is one of the most impressive sights on Durmitor.

The Tara River Canyon is one of the deepest and longest canyons in Europe, with steep walls rising over 1,300 metres. The Tara River, the longest river in Montenegro at around 144 km, is under UNESCO protection and renowned for its exceptionally pure water. The canyon stretches 78 km and offers spectacular scenery that can be admired from the famous bridge at Đurđevića Tara, a structure built in 1940 that rises 172 metres above the turquoise waters. Rafting through the Tara Canyon is one of the most popular adventure activities in Montenegro, and the zip-line from the bridge reaches speeds of up to 120 km/h.

Bobotov kuk is the highest peak of Durmitor and all of Montenegro, rising to 2,523 metres above sea level and dominating the entire massif. The ascent of Bobotov kuk is considered one of the most demanding mountain undertakings in the country and is recommended for experienced hikers with appropriate equipment. From the summit, a panoramic view extends across the entire Durmitor, the surrounding canyons, and, on clear days, a significant part of Montenegro. For those seeking the thrill of climbing without extreme effort, the Via Ferrata — a secured trail using cables and metal footholds — offers an alternative route to the inaccessible parts of the massif.

The Durmitor Ring is a circular panoramic route 76 kilometres long that starts from the centre of Žabljak and circles the entire mountain massif. During approximately 4 hours of driving and walking, visitors pass by unusually sculpted peaks — saddled, vividly coloured, twisted, and solitary — which are a true paradise for hikers and photographers. At the start of the route, a short detour to the Čurevac viewpoint is recommended, offering an unforgettable view of the Tara Canyon and the surrounding plateaus. The route is ideal for those who want to discover the different landscapes of the park in a single day, without demanding ascents.

Savin kuk ski resort is one of the most popular winter destinations in Montenegro and is recommended for experienced skiers. The Durmitor area is under snow for 120 to 150 days per year, and in certain areas such as Kalica, snowdrifts allow skiing even in the middle of summer. The cable car leads to the eastern slope of Savin kuk and operates throughout the year — in summer for panoramic excursions offering views of the massif and glacial lakes. On Savin kuk there is also the Savina voda spring, which according to local legend is considered to have therapeutic properties.
