Sušičko jezero

Durmitor's glacial lake that completely dries up in summer

Overview

Sušičko jezero is one of 18 glacial lakes in Durmitor National Park, located at the lowest point of the Sušica river canyon. What makes it exceptionally interesting is its seasonal nature — the lake fills with water during the colder months, then completely dries up in summer, leaving behind a dry riverbed. This rare hydrological phenomenon attracts visitors and researchers who come to witness it with their own eyes. The Sušica river canyon, at whose base the lake lies, offers a dramatic landscape with steep cliffs and untouched mountain forest.

The disappearing lake in the Sušica canyon

Sušičko jezero is located at the lowest point of the Sušica river canyon and represents one of the most unusual hydrological phenomena in Durmitor National Park. Unlike the other 17 glacial lakes of Durmitor, Sušičko undergoes a complete disappearance every year — during the summer months the lake dries up to a bare riverbed, only to fill with water again in spring and autumn. This phenomenon draws visitors who want to confirm with their own eyes the marvel of a lake that comes and goes with the season.

The Sušica river canyon surrounding the lake provides a dramatic mountain setting with steep cliffs and dense native forest. The trail through the canyon leads hikers through pristine Durmitor wilderness and offers geologically fascinating terrain that testifies to the glacial origins of the area. The canyon is part of Durmitor National Park, a protected area stretching across the heart of northern Montenegro, with Žabljak as the nearest urban centre at just 1,450 metres above sea level.

Crno jezero — Durmitor's largest lake

In the immediate vicinity of Sušičko jezero, just a few minutes' walk from the centre of Žabljak, lies Crno jezero — the largest and most famous of all 18 glacial lakes of Durmitor. Known for its crystal-clear water and spectacular views of the surrounding Durmitor peaks, this lake is an unmissable part of any visit to the national park. Crno jezero and Sušičko jezero together make an ideal two-stop excursion encompassing both the well-known and the rare glacial lakes of Durmitor.
