Step 1 of 5 · When

Choose your season

Sea in summer, snow in winter, hiking and wine in between – every season has its own Montenegro.

Best time to visit

Checking the forecast? Weather

Step 2 of 5 · Getting here

Getting here and from the airport

Two airports, the train from Belgrade and coaches from the region – and a fixed-price transfer from arrivals to your door.

Step 3 of 5 · Where to stay

Choose your base

Autumn keeps the sea warm and paints the mountains – split your stay between both.

Where-to-stay guides
Kolašin

Kolašin

Primeval beech and fir forest around a glacial lake at 1,094 m, at its most colourful from late September to mid-October. Entry €4; rowing boats can be hired on the lake.

Žabljak

Žabljak

An easy path circles the Black Lake under Međed, with the first snow on the peaks from late October. Park entry €5 a day; the Sedlo pass road closes with heavy snow.

Virpazar

Virpazar

Boat trips among the reeds and water lilies, birdwatching as the migrants arrive, and Crmnica's family wine cellars a short drive from Virpazar. Rijeka Crnojevića, on the lake's northern side, is worth the detour.

Kotor

Kotor

Swimmable into October, quieter lanes in Kotor and Perast, and the chestnut woods above Stoliv. The Kotor–Lovćen cable car has closed for the winter in early November in recent seasons.

Step 4 of 5 · Getting around

How to get around

A car for road trips, a transfer for arrival day, the bus on a budget.

Car rental

Rent a car

Best for road trips and the north

  • Freedom for viewpoints, villages and beaches buses never reach.
  • Pays off from two people or three days on the road.
  • Pick it up at the airport and drop it off where your trip ends.
from €32 / day23 cars to book

Private transfer

Best for arrival day and one base

  • A driver waits at arrivals, tracks your flight and carries the bags.
  • Fixed price per vehicle – no meter, no haggling.
  • Ideal for late landings, families and the mountain roads in winter.
from €20 / vehicle18 transfer routes

Bus

Best for tight budgets between towns

  • Frequent coaches along the coast and to Podgorica, Kolašin and Žabljak.
  • Buy tickets at the bus station; luggage is usually a small extra.
  • Airports have few direct buses – count on a taxi to the station.
