Before You Go

Best Time to Visit

Late April to early June for maximum water-based adrenaline (Class 4–5). May is ideal for hiking in the Prokletije and Durmitor — snow retreats from the lower trails and temperatures sit at 12–18°C.

Getting There

For Tara rafting: the starting point is Brštanovica or Đurđevića Tara bridge, about 2.5 hours' drive from Podgorica or Budva. Bus Budva–Žabljak costs around €15. For the Prokletije and Plav: TO Plav organises transport from Plav ([email protected], 069/313-393). We recommend renting a car for flexibility, as many locations are not served by public transport.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

The rafting season runs from April to October. Spring (late April – June) is the most popular period because snowmelt from Durmitor creates high water levels and Class 3–5 rapids. Water temperature is 10–12°C, so a wetsuit is mandatory. For families with children, it is better to wait until July–August when the water is warmer and the rapids are gentler.
For the standard one-day run from Brštanovica to Šćepan Polje (18 km, Class 3–5), basic experience or good physical fitness is recommended. All guides must hold an IRF (International Rafting Federation) licence. The shorter section Šljivansko–Žugića Luka (10 km, Class 2–4) is also suitable for beginners.
The Plav Tourist Organisation runs guided hikes (Vaganica, Tromeđa, Abdijino jezero, Bajrak) during the winter and spring seasons. Contact: [email protected] or phone 069/313-393. Transport and a lunch package are usually included in the price of the hike.
A one-day tour costs from €70 per adult (€60 for children), which usually includes equipment, a guide and a meal at the camp. Two-day rafting starts from €90 per person. Multi-day tours with overnight stays at camps start from €250 and include accommodation and three meals a day.
Kolašin is a year-round destination — in spring, cycling routes (Bašanje brdo, Šljivovica, Barutana) and hiking trails with experienced guides open up. Biogradska gora blooms in May with 160 species of orchids, and the trail around Biogradsko jezero (1,094 m a.s.l.) takes about 2 hours and is accessible to all ages.
Bijelo Polje (TO BP) offers rafting and kayaking on the Lim (Class 3–4 rapids, with a special attraction near Tifran), jeep safaris, quad adventures, horse riding, mountain biking and fishing. In addition, Dalovića pećina and Novakovića pećina are attractive destinations for speleologists.
