High water, green reed beds and nesting birds, including Dalmatian pelicans. National park entry is €5 and includes one boat cruise; book park boats a day ahead.
The primeval forest turns fresh green in May around its lake at 1,094 m; in 2026 the park opened on 16 March. Entry €4; rowing boats can be hired on the lake.
The Njegoš Mausoleum on Jezerski vrh opens on 15 April (entry €8), and Lipa Cave near Cetinje on 1 April. Lovćen National Park entry is €3.
Summer belongs to the coast – and to the mountains when the heat gets too much.
The busiest stretch of the coast, from Mogren and Jaz to Bečići, Sveti Stefan and Petrovac. Grad teatar in the old town in July and August; in 2026, Sea Dance on Bečići beach at the end of August.
Calm water for swimming, boat trips to Our Lady of the Rocks and the summer festivals of Kotor and Herceg Novi. Kotor's old town is busiest on cruise-ship days – go early or late.
About 12–13 km of sand running to the Bojana river, with shallow water for children and afternoon maestral winds for kitesurfing. In 2026 it hosted EXIT to Montenegro in early July.
About 22 °C at midday when the coast is over 30 °C. The Black Lake, Bobotov kuk and the Durmitor Ring road over Sedlo. Park entry €5 a day; the lake's car park charges by the hour and a shuttle runs from town.
Autumn keeps the sea warm and paints the mountains – split your stay between both.
Primeval beech and fir forest around a glacial lake at 1,094 m, at its most colourful from late September to mid-October. Entry €4; rowing boats can be hired on the lake.
An easy path circles the Black Lake under Međed, with the first snow on the peaks from late October. Park entry €5 a day; the Sedlo pass road closes with heavy snow.
Boat trips among the reeds and water lilies, birdwatching as the migrants arrive, and Crmnica's family wine cellars a short drive from Virpazar. Rijeka Crnojevića, on the lake's northern side, is worth the detour.
Swimmable into October, quieter lanes in Kotor and Perast, and the chestnut woods above Stoliv. The Kotor–Lovćen cable car has closed for the winter in early November in recent seasons.
Winter means Kolašin and Žabljak for the snow, and the coast for mild days.
The highest town in the Balkans, at 1,456 m, with the Savin Kuk ski area about 3 km away: 4.6 km of runs, lifts up to 2,213 m and a floodlit lift for night skiing. Walks lead to the frozen Black Lake; Durmitor park entry is €5 a day.
Montenegro's main ski town, 12 km below Kolašin 1600 and close to Kolašin 1450. From Podgorica take the motorway to Mateševo or the train – five a day in the 2026 timetable, about 1 h 20 min.
Winter is the quiet season in the Old Town: in January 2026 Kotor's hotels had about 6% of their August guests. Kotor Winter Fest in December and January, St Tryphon's feast on 3 February and the carnival later in the month.
