Autumn in Montenegro

Warm sea, turning beech forests and the grape harvest – September to November

Overview

From September to November the Adriatic cools from about 24 °C to 18 °C, the crowds thin out and the mountains change colour. September and October combine swimming with hiking and the grape harvest; November is quiet and wetter, best for the towns, Skadar Lake and the olive harvest around Bar.

Autumn is when Montenegro's coast and mountains are both at their best. The sea stays swimmable well into October, while the crowds fall away: in October 2025 hotels counted 44% fewer guests than in August. Inland, the beech forests of Biogradska gora and Durmitor start turning in late September, and by November the first snow settles on the peaks.

It is also harvest time. Vranac grapes are picked from mid-September in Crmnica and on the Plantaže estates near Podgorica, village stills start on the year's rakija, and around Bar the olive harvest runs from October into December.

The catch is timing. Seasonal hotels and beach bars close from mid-October, rafting and mountain huts wind down, and November brings the most rain of the three months plus winter-tyre rules on mountain roads. Do the mountains in September and October; keep November for the towns, the lake and the olive groves.

The vranac harvest

The vranac harvest

Montenegro's main red grape is picked from mid-September into October. Crmnica, the valley south of Virpazar known as the cradle of vranac, is lined with family cellars – call ahead, as small wineries don't keep fixed hours. Near Podgorica, Plantaže's Å ipčanik cellar sits in a 356-metre tunnel of a former military airfield.

Biogradska gora, protected since 1878 and one of Europe's last primeval forests, usually colours up from late September to mid-October around its lake at 1,094 m. In Durmitor and along the Tara canyon the beech turns copper against grey limestone.

Hiking before the snow

September and early October are the last reliable weeks for the high mountains: Durmitor's huts close at the end of September, and October is usually the final month for the full Peaks of the Balkans trail. Lower routes around Lovćen, Orjen and Skadar Lake are usually walkable into November, weather permitting.

Olives and chestnuts on the coast

Bar's olive harvest runs from October to December, centred on Stara maslina, an olive tree over 2,000 years old and protected since 1957. Across the Bay of Kotor, the chestnut woods above Stoliv ripen in late October; the village's Kostanjada chestnut feast was held around All Saints' Day until 2019 – check locally whether it runs this year.

Good to know

Good to know

What closes when

Beach bars, sunbed concessions and seasonal hotels start closing from mid-October. In Ulcinj, hotel arrivals in November 2025 were 99% below August; Budva, Kotor and Podgorica stay open all year.

Ferries, boats and the cable car

The Kamenari–Lepetane ferry operates 24 hours a day, all year round; a car pays €5 (price list at trajekt.me), and €5 at the ticket office. Boats to Our Lady of the Rocks and on Lake Skadar run less and less frequently as autumn progresses – check departures a day earlier. The Kotor–Lovćen cable car closed the season on 1–2 November in both 2024 and 2025.

Mountain roads and winter tyres

By law winter equipment is compulsory from 15 November to 30 March and on snow or ice at any time; the interior ministry's order also requires winter tyres on listed roads such as the Kotor serpentines, Lovćen, Žabljak and Sedlo whatever the weather (in 2025/26 until 1 April). Sedlo pass (1,907 m) closes with the first heavy snow, and the Durmitor Ring usually reopens only in late May or June.

Shorter days

Sunset in Kotor moves from 19:21 on 1 September to 18:28 on 1 October and 16:40 on 1 November. Clocks go back on 25 October, so start mountain hikes early.

What to pack

Layers: 17–26 °C by day on the coast, but frost at night in Žabljak by November. Bring a waterproof jacket – November is the wettest of the three months – and swimwear through October.

National park fees

Day tickets are €5 for Durmitor and €4 for Biogradska gora; an annual pass for all five national parks costs €13.50 in 2026. Rowing boats on Biogradsko jezero and the Black Lake cost €10 an hour.
