Bukumirsko jezero

Glacial lake at 1,448 m in Komovi Nature Park

Overview

Bukumirsko jezero is a glacial lake in the Kuči region, on the northern foothills of Mount Žijovo, at an elevation of 1,448 m above sea level. Its surface area is 19,320 m², it is 210 m long, 130 m wide, and up to 17 m deep — giving it a distinctive colour that transitions from light green near the shores to dark green at the centre. The lake lies within Komovi Nature Park and serves as the first checkpoint of the First Montenegrin Hiking Traverse CT-1, which spans 160 km connecting this lake with Crno jezero on Durmitor. In summer, the water is warm enough for swimming, and the surrounding meadows and katuns are ideal for camping. Above the lake rise the peaks of Pasjak, Štitan, Torač and Surdup — the highest peak of the Kuči Mountains at 2,184 m.

Bukumirsko jezero — glacial surface

The lake was formed during the glacial period and rests on a moraine ridge between the peaks of Torač, Zagon and Đebeza at 1,448 m above sea level. It is up to 17 m deep, which gives it a distinctive colour change from light green near the shores to dark green towards the centre. The water is transparent to a depth of 4 m and is alkaline. Around 15% of the lake's surface is covered by marsh vegetation that is expanding, and its shoreline is 585 m long.

Peak Surdup — 2,184 m

Surdup is the highest peak of the Kuči Mountains at 2,184 m above sea level and dominates the panorama above Bukumirsko jezero. The ascent is technically demanding and takes 4 to 5 hours from the lake, passing through open pastures and rocky ridges. From the summit there are views of the Prokletije, Komovi and — in clear weather — the Adriatic Sea. It is a challenge for experienced hikers and alpinists alike.

Hiking traverse CT-1

Bukumirsko jezero is the first checkpoint of the First Montenegrin Hiking Traverse CT-1, established in 1987. The traverse spans 160 km connecting Bukumirsko jezero with Crno jezero on Durmitor, passing through Komovi, Bjelasica and Sinjajevina. It is designed for eight days of hiking and links the national parks of Biogradska gora and Durmitor, giving it exceptional tourist significance.

Rikavačko jezero

The second glacial lake of the Kuči Mountains, situated at 1,314 m above sea level at the foot of the peak Vila (2,093 m). It is larger in dimensions than Bukumirsko jezero — 525 m long, 235 m wide and 13.9 m deep. The mountain ridge above the lake forms the state border between Montenegro and Albania. Its name comes from the sound the water makes striking the shores in stronger winds — the local Kuči people called that sound 'rika'.

There are two paved routes from Podgorica: via Kuči (Ubli, Kržanja, Kastrat) or via Veruša and Mokra. The route via Veruša and Mokra (12 km from Veruša) is fully paved. The last few hundred metres to the lake shore is an unpaved track. From Kolašin, the route goes via Mateševo and Veruša, approximately 40 km.
Camping on the surrounding meadows is possible and common, especially for hiking clubs. The lake lies within Komovi Nature Park, so the rules of nature protection must be respected — do not light fires in inappropriate places and do not leave litter.
Fishing at Bukumirsko jezero is prohibited in order to protect the ecosystem. The lake is rich in fish, but this measure has been introduced to preserve the biological diversity of the aquatic habitat.
