Medieval fortress-capital on Lake Skadar
Žabljak Crnojevića is the most famous and largest fortress on Lake Skadar, built in the 10th century by the Zetan princes of the Vojislavljević dynasty for military purposes. In the 15th century it became the capital of the Crnojević dynasty — at that time it was a town with 300 houses and a thriving trade. The fortress rises on a hilltop from which the surrounding terrain could be surveyed for miles, and today it offers exceptional views of the lake and the surrounding area. Traces of ancient churches and mosques can still be recognised at the site, bearing witness to a turbulent history of multiple conquests. It is surrounded by a village cemetery, a small church, and the houses of locals who live along the lakeshore.

Highlights

The largest and most famous fortress on Lake Skadar, built in the 10th century by the Zetan princes of the Vojislavljević dynasty. In the 15th century it became the capital of the Crnojević dynasty and grew into a town with 300 houses, an important economic and trading centre at the mouth of the Morača River. The ruler Ivan Crnojević defended the fortress against the Ottomans until 1479, when it fell under Turkish rule. Visible remains of ancient churches and mosques still stand on the walls today, bearing witness to a turbulent history of multiple conquests.

From the hilltop on which the fortress stands, a view extends over Lake Skadar and the mouth of the Morača River that reaches for miles into the distance. This strategic position was precisely the reason the fortress was built here — enemies could be spotted from a great distance. Today this point is one of the most attractive viewpoints in Skadar Lake National Park, particularly spectacular in spring when the vegetation is in full bloom.

The fortress is surrounded by an authentic village atmosphere — a local cemetery, a small church, and traditional houses of residents who live along the lakeshore. This combination of a historical site and a living village environment gives Žabljak Crnojevića a unique atmosphere rarely found at tourist destinations. A visit to this area offers insight into everyday life in a Montenegrin lakeside village, which has changed little in its essentials over the centuries.

The Rijeka Crnojevića flowing beneath the fortress is one of the most visually picturesque waterways in Montenegro. The scenic boat trip from Virpazar to Rijeka Crnojevića passes through a narrow valley with sheer cliffs and dense vegetation, and ranks among the most attractive tours in Skadar Lake National Park. This route is mentioned as one of the four most visited destinations on lake tours, alongside the monastery of Kom and the island of Grmožur.
