The Ostrog Half Marathon (Ostroški polumaraton) is one of Montenegro's most dramatic races: 21 kilometres from Nikšić to the Ostrog Monastery, the famous shrine built into a vertical cliff face. The 8th edition was held on 13 April 2025. Few finish lines anywhere carry this kind of weight: the monastery is carved directly into sheer rock high above the Bjelopavlići plain, and runners watch it grow closer with every stretch of the climb.

Race morning belongs to Nikšić, an easygoing city of beer and industry whose broad central square and plane-tree promenade give the start a relaxed, small-town feel. Runners start at Trg Šaka Petrovića in central Nikšić and head out across the plain, crossing the historic Carev most bridge and passing Pandurica before the course tilts upward for its defining challenge — the long climb to the monastery, finishing directly below the white walls of the cliff-hung shrine.

April suits the course well. Spring keeps the plain green and the air cool enough for the long grind uphill, and the light over the valley as the road rises is a reward in itself. The flat early stretch across the plain makes fast pacing tempting; the climb at the end punishes anyone who spends too much too soon.

Despite the profile, the race is deliberately welcoming: a generous 4-hour limit means recreational runners finish alongside club athletes. Walkers and steady joggers have time to take the ascent at their own rhythm, and the mixed field gives the day a friendly rather than fiercely competitive character.

Completing a half marathon at one of the Balkans' great pilgrimage sites, with the valley spread below, gives this race a sense of occasion few road events can match. Crossing the line beneath the white walls, legs burning and the plain far below, is the kind of finish runners talk about for years.

The race is held annually in April; the next edition is set for 11 April. Participation requires an entry fee and advance registration; spectators can cheer for free along the route and at the monastery finish. The start line is at Trg Šaka Petrovića in Nikšić.
