Arza Beach

A hidden pebble cove beside Arza Fortress, Luštica Peninsula

Overview

Arza Beach is situated at the tip of the Luštica Peninsula, in the municipality of Herceg Novi, right beside the remains of the historic Austro-Hungarian Arza Fortress. It is a wild, pebble cove surrounded by rocky terrain and Mediterranean vegetation, distinguished by crystal-clear water and near-complete silence for most of the year. The beach is most commonly reached by boat or small vessel, which makes it a true destination for nautical enthusiasts and lovers of unspoiled nature. From the beach, views stretch across to the island of Mamula, the island of Žanjic, and the ancient Austro-Hungarian fortress, making this a place where the sea, history, and wild coastline converge in one small space.

Arza Fortress beside the beach

Directly alongside the pebble cove stand the remains of the Austro-Hungarian Arza Fortress, built in the 19th century as part of the coastal defence system of the Bay of Kotor. From the fortress walls, there is a direct view of Mamula Island, Žanjic Island, and the open Adriatic Sea, making this site one of the rare points on the Montenegrin coast where history and wild nature are so closely intertwined. A short trail above the beach allows visitors to explore the fortress ruins in approximately 20–30 minutes.

Crystal-clear water of Arza Cove

The water in Arza Cove is among the clearest on the Luštica Peninsula, thanks to the cove's isolation and the absence of tourist infrastructure. The pebbly seabed and rocky underwater formations along the northern shore make it particularly attractive for snorkelling and diving. Underwater visibility reaches several metres, and the diversity of marine life is visible even in shallow water close to shore. This is one of the rare corners of the Montenegrin Riviera where swimming takes place in near-complete silence.

View of Mamula Island

From the beach and Arza Fortress, there is a direct view of Mamula Island with its 19th-century Austro-Hungarian fortress, one of the most recognisable silhouettes at the entrance to the Bay of Kotor. Mamula once served as a prison and today attracts visitors with its history and unspoiled nature. The visual contrast between the open sea, rocky islands, and the remains of the fortifications makes this one of the most striking views on the entire Luštica Peninsula.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

The easiest and recommended way is by boat — a small boat or yacht from Herceg Novi, Luštica Bay marina, or Žanjice. Land access exists but is steep, unmarked, and not suitable for all visitors. Boats can be hired in Herceg Novi or Luštica Bay.
Arza Beach has no catering facilities, showers, toilets, or sun lounger rentals. It is a wild, unspoiled cove. It is recommended that you bring food, water, and all necessary equipment with you.
May, June, and September are ideal — the sea is warm, the cove is peaceful, and there are no crowds. In July and August, boaters anchor in the cove more frequently. Visiting in the morning, before 9–10 a.m., guarantees greater quiet and privacy.
The beach is pebbly and the sea gradually deepens, which may be suitable for older children who are confident swimmers. However, the difficult access and lack of facilities make it less suitable for young children and families with babies. It is recommended for couples, adventurers, and nautical enthusiasts.
Directly beside the beach are the remains of the Austro-Hungarian Arza Fortress, and from there you can see Mamula Island and Žanjic Island. Nearby beaches Žanjice and Mirište are also accessible, as is the Blue Cave roughly halfway towards Luštica Bay.
