Pearl Coast — a 1,800 m pebble beach between Petrovac and Bar
Čanj is a small tourist resort located between Petrovac and Bar, approximately 12 km from Bar. The beach, known as Biserna obala (Pearl Coast), is 1,800 metres long and divided into two sections by a mountain ridge. It is covered with fine, multi-coloured sand along the shoreline and smooth pebbles in the water, which is how it got its name. Behind the beach you'll find hotels, restaurants and cafés surrounded by pine trees, cypresses and Mediterranean vegetation. Due to its distance from the main roads and its shallow sea, Čanj is especially popular as a family holiday destination.

Highlights

Biserna obala is the central tourism attraction of Čanj — a beach 1,800 metres long, covered with fine, multi-coloured pebbles and sand that gave it its name. A mountain ridge divides it into two separate smaller beaches, creating two distinct atmospheres along the same shoreline. The sea is shallow for up to 30–50 metres from the shore, making it one of the safest swimming beaches for children on the Montenegrin coast. Pine trees and cypresses in the background provide natural shade, while hotels, restaurants and cafés serving Mediterranean cuisine line the beach.

A small, secluded cove just a short distance from Čanj, accessible only by boat from Biserna obala — a brief 10–15 minute ride. The beach was named after Montenegrin Queen Milena, for whom it was a favourite bathing spot during her stays at the palace in Topolica near Bar. Surrounded by cliffs and crystal-clear water, its inaccessibility by land protects it from mass tourism. Local boatmen on Biserna obala organise trips to this beach daily throughout the summer season.

Just 12 km from Čanj, Stari Bar is the historic heart of the Bar municipality. The fortress, which served as the city's centre for centuries, preserves the remains of the 11th-century Romanesque-Gothic Cathedral of St George, traces of the Ottoman period (a gunpowder store and a hammam), and the ruins of the 13th-century Church of St Nicholas. Nearby, in the hamlet of Mirovica, stands an olive tree approximately 2,000 years old — one of the oldest olive trees in the Balkans. Stari Bar makes an ideal half-day complement to a beach holiday at Čanj for those seeking a historical dimension alongside their time by the sea.
What to do

The shallow sea extending 30–50 m from the shore makes Čanj safe for swimmers of all ages.

A variety of water sports and recreational activities are available on the beach throughout the summer season.

Local boatmen organise short trips to Kraljičina plaža (Queen's Beach) and the surrounding coves.

Clear water and a rich underwater world in the surrounding coves attract divers and snorkellers.

Sports courts on the beach allow for games of volleyball and football on sand.
