Crystal Beach

A wild cove with crystal-clear water, 10 km north of Ulcinj

Season: May — October
Overview

Crystal Beach is a small, wild cove approximately 100 metres long, located between Bar and Ulcinj near Kruč, right next to Hladna uvala. It takes its name from the transparent water that, on sunny days, takes on turquoise shades rarely seen on the Adriatic. Directly opposite the beach lies the island of Stari Ulcinj, a marine-protected area rich in underwater life. You can reach it either via a steep forest trail overland, or — more easily — by kayak or boat from Ulcinj. The beach has no commercial facilities whatsoever, which is precisely why it has preserved its wild character.

Crystal-clear water and a rocky cove

Crystal Beach takes its name from water so transparent that every stone on the bottom is visible as if through glass. On sunny days the water takes on turquoise shades that are rare on the Adriatic and are reminiscent of photographs from tropical destinations. The cove is approximately 100 metres long, surrounded by rocks and lush Mediterranean vegetation that provides natural shade. The rocky base and the sheltered cove protect against wind and waves, so the sea inside is almost always calm — ideal for swimming and spending time on the water.

The island of Stari Ulcinj

Directly opposite Crystal Beach, just a few hundred metres away, lies the island of Stari Ulcinj — a marine-protected area that attracts divers and snorkellers thanks to its rich and colourful underwater ecosystem. The exceptional underwater visibility makes this one of the better spots for observing the seabed on the Ulcinj riviera. The view from the beach to the island, with vegetation descending to the sea, creates a visual contrast that continually draws photographers to this location.

Hladna uvala and the kayak route

Right next to Crystal Beach lies Hladna uvala — the starting point for a kayak route that is one of the most popular ways to reach the beach. Kayak rental at Hladna uvala is available during the summer season, and the paddle to Crystal Beach takes approximately 15–25 minutes along a coastline of rocks and vegetation. The route passes by a series of smaller coves and cliffs, making the journey itself an attractive experience. Hladna uvala is also a destination in its own right — a tranquil inlet among olive groves that offers a respite from the crowds and its own quiet by the sea.

Overland, you turn off the main road towards Hladna uvala, then follow the road to the left up the hill to the end of the tarmac next to a villa (parking ~€5). From there, a steep forest trail leads to the beach. The easier and more pleasant option is to arrive by kayak from Hladna uvala or by organised boat from Ulcinj.
