Mala Beach Ulcinj

City sandy beach beside the walls of the Old Town, 360 m long

Season: June — October
Overview

Mala Beach is the central city beach of Ulcinj, situated directly below the walls of the Old Town, which appear to rise straight out of the sea. The beach is 360 metres long and can accommodate around 2,500 bathers. Fine sand covers the seabed as well, giving the water its distinctive dark blue-green colour, while the shallow bottom extending far out to sea makes it particularly well-suited for children and weaker swimmers. At the far end of the beach lies Ulcinj's small harbour with a well-maintained pier, while the beach backdrop is lined with a row of restaurants, beer gardens, and cafés.

Old Town above the beach

Rising directly above Mala Beach are the stone walls of Ulcinj's Old Town, whose ramparts appear to emerge from the sea itself. The Old Town is one of the best-preserved coastal-oriental urban complexes on the Adriatic, with narrow cobbled streets, mosques, and towers bearing witness to centuries of history under Venetian, Ottoman, and other rulers. The view from the ramparts over Mala Beach and the open sea is unique and worth every step of the climb.

Ulcinj's Small Harbour

At the very end of Mala Beach, 360 metres from its starting point, lies Ulcinj's small harbour with a beautifully maintained pier. The harbour forms a natural boundary between the city beach and a narrow sea inlet, and serves as a popular promenade for visitors seeking a short break from sunbathing. The pier offers a direct view of the Old Town ramparts and the characteristic silhouette of Ulcinj rising towards the interior.

Shallow sandy seabed

One of Mala Beach's key natural features is its shallow seabed covered with fine sand that stretches far out to sea. Unlike most beaches where the bottom quickly becomes deep, here visitors can walk far out into the sea without fear of a sudden drop in depth. It is precisely this sand on the seabed that is responsible for the dark blue-green colour of the water that is characteristic of Mala Beach and makes it visually distinctive. This quality is especially valued by families with young children.
