Maljevik Beach

A pebble beach between Čanj and Sutomore, beneath a pine forest

Season: June – September
Overview

Maljevik Beach is nestled in a cove between Čanj and Sutomore, in the municipality of Bar. It stretches approximately 300 metres, with a surface of pebble and rock, and a dense pine forest that provides natural shade. The beach is divided into two sections — the larger Maljevik and the smaller Mali Maljevik — separated by the Kličevac headland, each with its own character and atmosphere. The water is crystal clear and rich in underwater life, making it a great spot for snorkelling. For visitors seeking a quieter corner away from the main beach in Sutomore, Maljevik is a convenient choice just a few minutes' drive away.

Mali Maljevik — a cove in the shade

Mali Maljevik is the smaller of the two neighbouring coves, separated from the main beach by the Kličevac headland. Thanks to the steep pine slopes that surround it on all sides, this cove remains in deep natural shade well into the morning hours — a rare occurrence on Montenegro's sunny coast. The beach has a small seasonal bar and sun loungers. It is ideal for those seeking quiet and a more intimate experience of the sea, far from the crowds that characterise Sutomore's Zlatna obala, which is only a few minutes' drive away.

Maljevik's underwater ecosystem

The Maljevik cove is among the best-preserved underwater ecosystems on the Bar riviera. The crystal-clear water reveals sea urchins, eels and submerged stone remains scattered across the seabed. Visibility is exceptionally good on calm days, attracting snorkellers and mask divers. There is also an underwater trail leading towards the neighbouring cove. One word of caution: after a southerly wind (jugo), the cove collects plastic debris which reduces visibility and water quality — on those days it is better to wait a day or two.

The pine forest above the beach

Maljevik Beach is one of the few beaches on the Montenegrin coast with a dense pine forest stretching directly above the shore, providing natural shade for bathers. The pines grow directly on the rocky slopes, and their scent fills the entire cove. This natural protection means visitors often do not even need a parasol — a practical advantage and one of the reasons Maljevik is popular among those who prefer an unspoilt setting over organised beach complexes.

Haj-Nehaj Fortress above Sutomore

Just 2.3 km from Maljevik Beach stands the Haj-Nehaj fortress, one of the defining features of Sutomore's skyline. Set on a steep ridge above the settlement, the fortress offers a panoramic view of the entire Bar riviera and coastal coves, including Maljevik. The walk up takes around 30–40 minutes and is recommended in the late afternoon when temperatures are lower. Alongside a visit to Maljevik Beach, a trip to the fortress fits naturally into a full-day itinerary exploring this part of the Bar coast.
