A peaceful seaside village on the Herceg Novi Riviera, 4.5 km from the centre
Zelenika is located in the Bay of Kotor, just 4.5 km east of Herceg Novi, separated from it by the beach at Meljine, approximately 800 metres long. The village offers a range of diverse beaches — from fine sand and gravel to concrete surfaces — with Lalovina and Zmijice being particularly noteworthy. The sea is shallow and accessible, making Zelenika a favourite destination for families with children. A seafront promenade connects Zelenika with Igalo to the west, and the luxury Portonovi Resort and Lazure Marina are situated nearby. Thanks to a Mediterranean climate with around 200 sunny days per year, the swimming season lasts more than 5 months.

Highlights

Lalovina is located between Meljine and Zelenika, approximately 3 km from the centre of Herceg Novi, and is considered the most beautiful beach in the entire Zelenika area. It is surrounded by lush subtropical vegetation and is notable for receiving sunshine well into the late afternoon hours, longer than most neighbouring beaches. The sea is shallow with a gradual entry, summer temperatures reach 22–26°C, and the fine gravel surface and absence of underwater rocks make it suitable even for less confident swimmers. Beach equipment is available for hire, and nearby cafés offer refreshments throughout the day.

Zmijice is a public sandy beach measuring 150 metres in length and 1,200 m² in area, fully equipped with sunbeds, parasols and a shower. Entry is free, the sea is shallow and free of underwater obstacles, and the beach is particularly popular with families with children. The surface consists of medium-fine sand, making it one of the few genuine sandy beaches on the Herceg Novi Riviera. It is located in the centre of Zelenika, with parking spaces and cafés nearby.

Hotel Plaža Zelenika is the only surviving hotel building from the early twentieth century in Montenegro, constructed in 1902 by the Hungarian nobleman Dr. Antal Magyar from Budapest. It was originally named the 'Pension on the Green Beach', and that year is regarded as the beginning of modern hotel development in Montenegro and the Bay of Kotor. The building, featuring three distinctive red towers, covers 1,255 m² and has walls of local stone, while the timber and bricks were brought from Venice. Today it stands as a striking historic landmark of Zelenika and the Herceg Novi Riviera.

Zelenika is connected to Meljine and Igalo by a seafront promenade that forms part of the famous Pet Danica walkway — a coastal path running the entire length of the Herceg Novi Riviera. The promenade follows the shoreline of the Bay of Kotor and offers unobstructed views of the bay, passing boats and surrounding mountains. Walking towards Meljine, you reach a well-equipped town beach ideal for a family day out, while Igalo offers well-known health and rehabilitation facilities. The total promenade from Meljine to Igalo stretches 6 km and is suitable for a leisurely walk, jogging or cycling.
