Mountain town on the Lim River, northeastern Montenegro
Berane lies in the fertile valley of the Lim River in northeastern Montenegro, at an altitude of 670 m, surrounded by the mountain ranges of Bjelasica to the west and Cmiljevica to the east. The town preserves a rich medieval heritage — the Monastery of Đurđevi Stupovi, dating from the 13th century, is one of the most significant preserved monuments of medieval architecture in Montenegro. The famous Main Street, designed in 1862 after the model of European metropolises, has always been and remains the centre of town life, with restaurants, cafés and authentic Berane specialities. In winter, the town serves as a starting point for the Lokve ski centre on Cmiljevica, just 15 minutes away, and in summer for hiking, fishing and sport climbing.

Highlights

Built in the mid-13th century, the Monastery of Đurđevi Stupovi is one of the finest and most significant preserved examples of medieval architecture in Montenegro. It is situated on a hill above Berane and offers views over the Lim basin. According to historical sources, a literary and painting school operated within the monastery, and Saint Sava established one of the first Serbian eparchies in this area in 1219. The monastery was a spiritual and cultural centre of the region for centuries and is today the most visited historical attraction in Berane.

Located on the bank of the Kaludarska River in the village of Kaludra, 9 km from Berane, the Monastery of Ćelije was originally built in the 14th century during the Nemanjić era and destroyed in the 17th century. It was restored in 2001 through the efforts of patron Veljko Ralević, when a church dedicated to St. Luke the Apostle, a bell tower and a residence with monastic cells were erected. The monastery treasury holds a cross adorned with silver and precious stones, as well as relics of St. Luke the Apostle. In the immediate vicinity are medieval hermit caves — the kellion type of dwelling that gave the monastery its name.

Berane's Main Street was designed in 1862 by architect Rizvan-beg, a graduate of the Sorbonne in Paris, modelled on European metropolises. It was the most spacious street among Turkish settlements in this part of the Balkans. At the beginning of the 20th century, this street had four hotels and four hans — gathering places for writers, actors and painters who later became well-known names in culture. Today the korzo is the centre of Berane's gastronomic offer: here you can try sweet kačamak, grilled trout and burek from the famous Berane buregdžinicas.

The climbing site at Sjelača, just 15 minutes' drive from Berane, offers around thirty top-grade routes on an easily accessible rock face beside the road leading to the village of Lubnice and the mountain of Jelovica. The road leads directly to the base of the rock, making it one of the most accessible climbing sites in northern Montenegro. The recommended period to visit is summer, due to the pleasant shade for most of the day. Climbers can stay in authentic rural houses in the surrounding area, contributing to an authentic experience of this region.

The Lokve ski centre is located on the mountain of Cmiljevica, just 15 minutes' drive from the centre of Berane, making it one of the most accessible winter centres in northern Montenegro. The centre offers slopes for skiing and snowboarding for various skill levels. Cmiljevica is the mountain on the eastern side of the Berane basin, and its slopes also offer hiking opportunities in summer. The proximity to the town makes this ski centre ideal for day trips without the need for separate mountain accommodation.
