The Crnogorski petoboj — Montenegrin Pentathlon — is a summer revival of the old strongman games of the Montenegrin highlands, held in Žabljak on the Durmitor plateau. Long before organized sport reached these mountains, herders and highlanders measured themselves against each other in feats of raw strength and agility, and this event brings those contests back to life.
The setting adds its own weight. Žabljak stands on the open Durmitor plateau, ringed by summer pastures where the old highland herding life survives to this day — the very world these games come from. Holding the pentathlon here is less a reconstruction than a homecoming.
Competitors face the traditional disciplines in their original form: throwing a heavy stone from the shoulder, rope pulling, long jump and running. Each test is simple, ancient and unforgiving — no equipment beyond a stone and a rope, just as it was for generations of mountain men proving themselves at village gatherings.
What makes the day is the setting and the mood. The games unfold in a folk-festival atmosphere in the highest-altitude town region of the country, with the Durmitor peaks on the horizon, and the crowd is as much a part of the spectacle as the strongmen. It feels less like a sporting event than a living piece of highland heritage.
Visitors need no preparation to enjoy the day: the disciplines explain themselves at a glance, the crowd's reactions carry the drama, and between rounds there is time to wander the town and its cafés. Photographers should arrive early — the stone throw against the backdrop of the plateau is one of the north's great images.
The pentathlon is held in summer in and around Žabljak's town centre, and watching is completely free — an easy and memorable stop for anyone holidaying on Durmitor.
