Summer in the Old Royal Capital (Ljeto u Prijestonici)
When
Where
Summer in the Old Royal Capital (Ljeto u Prijestonici) is Cetinje's summer season — the rebranded successor of the long-running Cetinjsko kulturno ljeto. The 2026 season stretches over three months, from 13 June to 20 September.
Cetinje wears the season well. The old royal capital is a compact town of squares, low façades and leafy streets where much of Montenegro's history is concentrated, and where a concert or an exhibition opening is never more than a short walk away. Its cooler inland air makes a summer evening event genuinely pleasant — a different rhythm from the coast below.
The programme spreads concerts, theatre, gallery openings and literary evenings across Cetinje's squares and the Royal Theatre, while the villages around the old capital host traditional sport tournaments — a strand that ties the season to the countryside as much as to the town.
A visitor's evening follows the town's own pace: a stroll through the centre as the programmes begin, an exhibition or a reading in one of the venues, then a concert in a square as the night cools. Because everything is within walking distance, it is easy to sample several events in a single evening.
Running from early summer deep into September, the festival keeps the old capital's cultural life going well past the peak-season rush on the coast — a reason to head inland on any summer evening. The rebranding from Cetinjsko kulturno ljeto to Ljeto u Prijestonici changed the name, not the idea: the historic capital playing host to culture all summer long.
Ljeto u Prijestonici runs 13 June – 20 September 2026 across Cetinje and the villages around it. All programmes are free, so an evening at the festival costs nothing more than the trip to the old capital.
