Operosa Montenegro Opera Festival
When
Where
Operosa is Montenegro's only opera festival, founded in 2006 by Katherine Haataja and staged a dozen times since. Its stages are the sea fortresses of Herceg Novi — Kanli Kula and Forte Mare — with performances also reaching Luštica Bay and the island fortress of Mamula. The 2026 festival runs from 18 July to 15 August.
The venues would justify the trip on their own. Kanli Kula crowns the Old Town, its massive walls enclosing an open-air auditorium high above the rooftops; Forte Mare stands directly over the water at the town's edge, waves against its base; and Mamula rises from the open sea at the mouth of the bay, reached only by boat. Opera was made for drama of this order.
The centrepiece of 2026 is the premiere of "Balkanska carica", opening at Luštica Bay on 18 July and returning at Forte Mare on 14 August and on Mamula island on 15 August, alongside a staging of Donizetti's L'Elisir d'Amore. Hearing opera inside a fortress above the Adriatic, with the night sea behind the stage, is an experience no conventional opera house can match.
The star turn comes on 13 August, when the celebrated American mezzo-soprano Joyce DiDonato performs with the string trio Time for Three at Kanli Kula. Operosa is also a training ground: its young-artist academy runs in Cetinje alongside the productions, reflecting the festival's mission of developing the next generation of opera performers. The festival carries the EFFE label of Europe's festival association.
For visitors, the festival turns an evening into a small expedition: the climb to the fortress gate, the stone stairways, the first sight of the stage against the darkening sea — and afterwards the walk back down through the warm lanes of the Old Town with the music still in your ears.
Performances are ticketed, and fortress venues are intimate, so booking ahead is wise. July and August evenings in Herceg Novi are warm and clear — arrive early to watch the light fade over the entrance to the Bay of Kotor before the overture.
