Tivat Cultural Summer

Tivat Cultural Summer is the umbrella season that gathers the town's whole summer programme under one name, running in 2026 from 20 June to 31 August — much the same span as the 2025 edition, which ran from 21 June to 31 August. Its core is the Purgatorije festival, run by the Centar za kulturu Tivat at the Ljetnja pozornica, the town's Summer Stage.

Tivat suits the role of summer host better than almost any town on the Bay of Kotor. It sits on the sunniest, most open stretch of the bay, its long waterfront running past palm trees, moored yachts and the polished quays of Porto Montenegro. On a July evening the whole town seems to be outdoors — which is exactly the audience a season like this is built for.

The programme is deliberately wide: theatre, literary evenings, fine-art exhibitions and concerts ranging from classical to contemporary, alongside stand-up comedy, open-air film screenings and folklore. While the Summer Stage carries the main events, side programmes spill out onto the Porto Montenegro promenade and into the town's galleries, so the season keeps several registers going at once — a serious drama one night, a comedy set or a film under the stars the next.

A typical evening is easy to shape around it. Visitors drift along the waterfront as the heat eases, catch an exhibition opening a few steps from the marina, then settle in at the Ljetnja pozornica as the stage lights come up against the darkening bay. Nothing requires planning days ahead; the pleasure is in walking into whatever the evening offers.

The result is a season rather than a single festival — more than two months when something is happening in Tivat almost every evening, from a play under the open sky to a concert by the water. For anyone spending more than a night or two in the Boka, it is the simplest cultural safety net of the summer.

The season runs 20 June – 31 August 2026 across Tivat's venues, with the Summer Stage as its anchor. Most programmes are free or charge only symbolic tickets, so an evening at the Cultural Summer rarely needs more preparation than a walk into town.
