Dani planinskog cvijeća — Mountain Flower Days — is Žabljak's celebration of the moment Durmitor's high meadows reach peak bloom. The multi-day festival begins around Petrovdan, 12 July, and is organized jointly by the Municipality of Žabljak, the local tourism organization and the town's Culture Center.
Žabljak sits high on the Durmitor plateau, a small town of timber roofs and pine-scented air that serves as the base for Montenegro's most famous mountain landscape. In July the snow has retreated to the shaded gullies of the peaks, and the meadows between the town and Black Lake turn into a brief, extravagant carpet of colour — the very moment this festival is built around.
The heart of the programme lies out on the mountain: guided flower-themed hikes lead visitors into Durmitor National Park, where the plateau's famously rich mountain flora spreads across meadows, slopes and lake shores. Back in town, folklore performances and concerts take over the stage, while stalls of handicrafts and local products fill the streets. Children's activities and sports events round out the schedule.
The atmosphere is that of a small mountain town celebrating its own landscape — locals, hikers and families mingle between the park trails and the town programme, and the timing catches the Durmitor plateau at its most colourful point of the whole year.
For visitors, the festival is an easy way to experience the plateau with local company: the guided walks remove the guesswork of where the bloom is best, and the evenings back in town add music and a fair to what would otherwise be a quiet mountain resort. It is Žabljak at its most welcoming, celebrating the landscape it lives from.
The festival runs over several days in mid-July, with hikes departing into the national park and the cultural programme centred on Žabljak's town venues. All events are free of charge, making it an easy addition to any summer stay on Durmitor.
