Čorbijada

Čorbijada is Nikšić's fish-soup cook-off, held since 2023 on the shore of Slano jezero, the lake just outside the city. The 3rd edition took place on 13 September 2025, within the city's month-long Septembarski dani celebrations.

Teams arrive with their own cauldrons and simmer riblja čorba — fish soup built on carp, pike and trout — over open fires along the lakeshore. The contest has quickly gone regional: the 2024 edition drew 36 teams, including crews from Bosnia and Herzegovina, Serbia and Croatia. A jury tastes its way through the cauldrons and crowns the winners.

Every team guards its own approach — the cut of the fish, the patience of the simmer, the moment the pot finally comes off the fire — and part of the day's pleasure is wandering the shoreline, comparing aromas from fire to fire and collecting opinions on whose čorba is ahead this year.

Around the competition unfolds a full family day at the lake: music, food and an easygoing shoreline crowd, with the Nikšić hills as a backdrop. The smell of woodsmoke over the water is the event's real signature. It is an unhurried kind of festival day, built around fire, water and patience, where the main event simmers for hours before anyone tastes a spoonful.

The timing places Čorbijada within September Days, Nikšić's month-long city celebration, so a visit pairs easily with the wider programme back in town on Trg slobode. Early September usually still feels like summer at the lake, and Slano jezero lies close enough to the city that the cook-off draws a genuine cross-section of Nikšić out to the shore for the day.

Čorbijada is held annually; the coming edition takes place on 12 September at Slano jezero near Nikšić. Team entry costs around 30 EUR, while visiting — and hovering hopefully near the cauldrons — is free.
