Plav sits in Montenegro's far north-east, on a glacial lake beneath the jagged wall of the Prokletije — the mountains whose slopes produce the wild blueberries the festival celebrates. At the height of the mountain summer the setting is at its best: high peaks, cool air, and the lake and national park close at hand from the town square.
The core of the festival is an agriculture fair of blueberry products, honey and handicrafts — the 2025 fair drew more than 2,000 visitors — alongside organized blueberry-picking trips into the national park. Evenings bring folklore performances, ethno evenings and concerts by regional performers, and the festival traditionally closes with the crowning of Miss Blueberry.
A busy sports programme uses the setting to the full: mountain hikes and races in Prokletije, boat outings on Lake Plav, and boxing and football exhibitions in town. Visitors can shape their own version of the festival — a market-and-concert day around the square, or a hiking day that ends with an ethno evening.
Running for more than three weeks, it is one of the best excuses to visit Montenegro's far north-east — a region most itineraries miss — with the blueberry harvest as its centrepiece and a full calendar of reasons to linger.
The twenty-sixth edition runs 12 July – 4 August 2026, centred on Gradski trg, Lake Plav and Prokletije National Park. The festival is free to attend; the programme is published at daniborovnice.me.
