Dani nezavisne scene (Days of the Independent Scene) is the only festival in Montenegro devoted to non-institutional, independent theatre. It is hosted by the Royal Theatre Zetski dom in Cetinje — the 2024 edition ran a full month, 2 to 30 March, with around twenty productions, and the next edition follows in September 2026.
The festival gathers NGO and independent troupes from five countries, showcasing the theatre that happens outside national institutions: experimental formats, small ensembles and contemporary titles of the "White Rabbit Red Rabbit" kind that rarely reach mainstream stages in the region. Expect the unexpected — the point of the programme is precisely the work that no conventional repertory season would risk.
For audiences, it is a rare concentrated look at the region's freest theatrical energy, staged in the intimate halls of Montenegro's most storied theatre building. The contrast is part of the charm: rough-edged, resource-light productions playing inside the old royal capital's grandest cultural address, with the audience close enough to feel part of the work.
The independent scene works with minimal resources and maximal invention, and the festival's programming celebrates precisely that resourcefulness. Cetinje suits the mood — a quiet town of low stone houses and museums in the mountain air below Lovćen, small enough that the festival becomes part of daily life for its whole run rather than an event you visit and leave.
Prices reflect the scene's ethos: around 3 EUR per show, or a 20 EUR pass for the whole festival. The next edition runs through September 2026 at the Zetski dom in Cetinje. With shows this affordable, the festival rewards curiosity — take a chance on titles you have never heard of and companies you cannot place, because giving that work a stage is exactly what the festival exists for.
