The Festival of Urban Culture is Nikšić's street-art programme, launched in 2025 and running from summer into September. Its mission is simple and visible: to turn the city's walls into a public gallery of murals by local and regional artists.
Nikšić wears the idea well. This is an easygoing city of beer and industry, with a broad central square, Trg slobode, and a plane-tree promenade where much of daily life happens on foot — exactly the kind of walkable town where large-scale wall paintings can be discovered street by street rather than sought out in a gallery.
The flagship of the first edition is hard to miss — a large mural of Nikola Tesla painted in the street that bears his name, the kind of landmark piece that anchors a city's mural scene. Alongside the professional artworks, the festival runs a citizens' competition for the most beautiful balcony and courtyard, pulling residents into the beautification of their own streets.
The festival is organised by the Municipality together with the office of Nikšić's candidacy for European Capital of Culture 2030 and the Tourist Organisation — part of a broader effort to reframe the industrial city as a creative one. For visitors, it adds a self-guided layer to any stroll: new murals appear across town each season.
The best way to take it in is simply to wander. Summer evenings, when the heat eases and the promenade fills, are ideal for a slow loop past the painted facades; and because the works go up over the course of the season, patient visitors may even catch artists mid-mural, scaffolding up and walls half transformed.
The festival runs annually from July through September across the city's facades. Everything is free and permanently on view once painted, which means the collection keeps growing: each summer adds a new layer to the open-air gallery, and a return visit to Nikšić always has something new on its walls.
