Linden Film Fest is Cetinje's film festival, staged in one of Montenegro's grandest cultural settings: the National Museum's Vladin dom (Government House), whose atrium and Ivan Crnojević hall become cinemas for a week. The 2024 edition ran from 31 May to 6 June with more than 30 screenings.
The programme spans fiction and documentary with a clear regional focus, organised into four selections that also make room for student short films, giving film-school talent a festival premiere alongside established directors. For audiences this means variety without sprawl: each selection has its own character, and the regional focus keeps the films close to the stories and landscapes of this part of Europe.
Watching a film inside the monumental Vladin dom, surrounded by the museum's collections and the old capital's history, gives Linden a character no multiplex can offer. Cetinje was Montenegro's royal capital, and it still carries that identity in its museums, its low stone houses and the mountain air drifting down from Lovćen; stepping out of a screening into those quiet streets is part of the festival's appeal.
Early June evenings in Cetinje add to the charm, with the town's walkable centre just outside the museum doors. The season is kind here: the days are warm but the mountain air stays fresh, and the stroll between screenings, past museum facades and shaded courtyards, becomes a small ritual of its own.
The festival suits unhurried visitors as much as committed cinephiles. You can build a full festival day around the programme or simply drop in for an evening screening; either way, the mix of fiction, documentary and student shorts means there is always something worth taking a chance on, and the museum setting makes even a casual visit feel like an occasion.
Linden Film Fest is held annually in early summer; the coming edition runs from 28 May to 3 June at the Vladin dom of the National Museum of Montenegro in Cetinje. All screenings are free of charge, and the programme is published at lindenfest.me — an easy, cost-free reason to spend a summer evening in the royal capital.
