Fig Festival (Praznik smokve)

On the first Saturday of September, the Fig Festival — Praznik smokve — celebrates the fig harvest of Budva's hinterland at the Reževići Memorial Home, set on the coastal road between Petrovac and Sveti Stefan in the heart of the Paštrovići region.

This stretch of the riviera is its quietest and most storied: stone hamlets scattered through olive groves on the slopes above small coves, the old world of the Paštrovići families still legible in every terraced wall. The fig thrives here as it has for centuries, and early September — when the fruit ripens faster than anyone can pick it — is the natural moment for a celebration.

Village producers from the Paštrovići bring what generations have made from this most Mediterranean of fruits: homemade fig desserts, jams and rakija prepared in family kitchens. Tables fill with tastings, and the recipes on offer are the kind that never reach shops.

Klapa groups provide the soundtrack, their layered a cappella harmonies suiting the setting — stone, olives and fig trees above the sea. It is a small, unhurried festival that rewards travellers exploring the quieter coast between Budva and Petrovac.

Behind the tastings lies the older meaning: the fig was the frugal sweetness of the coastal household, dried for winter, distilled, preserved — and honouring it honours the self-sufficient village life of the hinterland. Talking with the producers is half the pleasure; every jar has a family behind it.
