On the first Saturday of September, the Fig Festival — Praznik smokve — celebrates the fig harvest of Budva's hinterland at the Reževići Memorial Home, set on the coastal road between Petrovac and Sveti Stefan in the heart of the Paštrovići region.
Village producers from the Paštrovići bring what generations have made from this most Mediterranean of fruits: homemade fig desserts, jams and rakija prepared in family kitchens. Tables fill with tastings, and the recipes on offer are the kind that never reach shops.
Klapa groups provide the soundtrack, their layered a cappella harmonies suiting the setting — stone, olives and fig trees above the sea. It is a small, unhurried festival that rewards travellers exploring the quieter coast between Budva and Petrovac.
Entry is free. Early September is fig season at its peak and one of the finest times on the riviera: the crowds have eased, the sea is at its warmest, and the hinterland villages are busy with the harvest this festival honours.
