Roots Revival Reggae Festival

Since 2022, July in Herceg Novi has had a distinctly Caribbean pulse: the Roots Revival Reggae Festival fills three fortress nights above the Old Town. The 2026 edition runs 17–19 July at Kanli Kula, the great fortress overlooking the bay — a move from the festival's former home on the Forte Mare terrace.

Kanli Kula is the crown of Herceg Novi's skyline: a massive stone stronghold above the terracotta roofs of the Old Town, its walls enclosing an open-air arena with views across the entrance of the Bay of Kotor. By day it is a monument to visit; on festival nights it becomes an amphitheatre of bass and lights, the sea glinting darkly beyond the ramparts.

The line-up is international, bringing reggae acts to a stage where the backdrop is open sea and the floor is centuries-old stone. Few reggae festivals anywhere can claim a setting like it — bass rolling off fortress walls, salt air, and the lights of the bay's entrance shimmering beyond the stage.

Each night runs from 20:00 to 02:00, with sound-system sets keeping the rhythm going deep into the night, in the tradition of reggae culture where the selector matters as much as the band. The pacing suits the setting: live sets while the evening is young, then the slow, heavy sound-system hours as the town below goes quiet.

For a festival barely a few editions old, it has settled quickly into the town's summer rhythm — proof that Herceg Novi's fortresses, long used for film and music events, can carry any genre that respects a great backdrop.

The festival is ticketed, and the fortress setting gives it an intimate, capacity-limited character — worth securing tickets ahead in peak season. Herceg Novi's waterfront cafés and beaches fill the daytime hours before the evening's first set, making the festival an easy anchor for a mid-July stay.
