The Beekeeping Fair (Sajam pčelarstva) is a Podgorica tradition roughly three decades old, held for three days in mid-October — the 2024 edition ran from 17 to 19 October — on Trg nezavisnosti, the capital's central square. It is the kind of event that shows the city at its most likeable: unhurried, food-minded and glad of an excuse to gather on the square.
Around twenty stands gather beekeepers from Montenegro, Serbia and Bosnia and Herzegovina, offering honey in all its regional varieties alongside mead, propolis and other hive products. Free tastings are the heart of the experience: visitors move from stand to stand comparing honeys and talking directly with the people who produce them, and every producer has an opinion about what makes theirs different.
The fair is organised by the Beekeepers' Association and the Beekeeping Union with support from the Ministry of Agriculture, and it doubles as the annual meeting point of the region's beekeeping community — equal parts market, tasting event and trade gathering. Listen in and you will catch beekeepers trading notes with each other as eagerly as visitors trade cash for jars.
October in Podgorica is mild, and the square hums with an easy autumn-market atmosphere. The capital sits on the plain where its rivers meet, and autumn is arguably its best season — soft light, comfortable walking weather and cafe terraces still in service all around the fair, so the visit folds naturally into a lazy afternoon in the centre.
Entry is free, and the fair is an ideal stop for edible souvenirs straight from the producer. It returns each year in mid-October to Trg nezavisnosti, with the next edition running from 15 to 17 October 2026. Come hungry, taste widely before choosing, and leave room in your luggage — jars of honey are among the most portable and genuinely local gifts Montenegro offers.
