Dani meda (Honey Days) Nikšić

Dani meda (Honey Days) is Nikšić's honey fair, held each September around the 18th as part of the city's Septembarski dani festivities. Its home is the plateau in front of the Robne kuće department store, in the very centre of town.

More than 40 exhibitors set out honey, pollen, propolis and other hive products, alongside beekeeping equipment for those in the trade. The stalls reward slow browsing: honeys vary with the terrain the bees have worked, and tasting your way along the plateau, jar by jar, is very much the point of the visit.

The scale of local beekeeping gives the fair its depth: the local association counts around 240 members tending roughly 11,000 hives in the Nikšić area, and the fair is their annual shop window. Behind every jar stands the producer who made it, glad to explain the season, the flowers and the difference between one honey and the next — the kind of conversation no shop shelf can offer.

The timing is deliberate — the fair coincides with Municipality Day on 18 September, when the city centre is at its liveliest, so browsing honey stands flows naturally into the wider September Days programme on Trg slobode. It is the easiest place in the region to compare local honeys and talk directly with the producers.

Nikšić suits a fair like this. An easygoing beer-and-industry city with a broad central square and a plane-tree promenade, it does its trading face to face, and the honey fair belongs to that same tradition — local produce, local pride, and conversation as part of the purchase. With the whole centre in a festive mood, the fair makes an easy, rewarding stop on a September walk through town.

Dani meda is held annually in September; the coming edition takes place on 18 September on the plateau by Robne kuće in central Nikšić. Entry is free, and most visitors leave with a jar or three.
