The Petrovac Jazz Festival is Montenegro's longest-running jazz and blues gastro festival, founded in 2007 by the NGO Urbani kult and reaching its 20th jubilee edition on 3–6 September 2026, with the line-up still to be announced. Over its history it has hosted more than 3,000 musicians from over 30 countries.
Petrovac was built for exactly this. A small bay town with a sandy beach, a short promenade shaded by pines and a modest stone fortress at the harbour, it has none of the riviera's flash and all of its charm — and in the first days of September, when the peak-season crowds have gone, its calm turns almost luxurious.
The stage stands on the seafront, and the timing is deliberate: the first week of September, when the riviera exhales after peak season. Concerts play to a relaxed post-season crowd with the sound of the surf between sets — jazz and blues in exactly the atmosphere they were made for.
Two decades of editions have given the festival a faithful audience that returns year after year, treating the first week of September in Petrovac as a fixed appointment. Newcomers are absorbed instantly; the seafront crowd is as unhurried as the music.
The festival runs in the same week as its sibling event, the Sun Reggae Fest, also organised by Urbani kult, so early-September Petrovac effectively becomes a small music town, moving from jazz to reggae across the week.
All concerts are free. Petrovac in September offers warm sea, quieter beaches and golden light — pair an afternoon swim with an evening of blues on the seafront and you have the riviera at its most civilised. Four nights, 3–6 September, and not a ticket in sight.
