The International Sculpture Symposium in Danilovgrad has run since 1972 and holds official status as a "manifestation of special significance for Montenegrin culture." Its raw material is local: the white Maljat marble quarried near the town, which international sculptors carve in open-air studios each edition.
Danilovgrad itself is a small town in the green Zeta river valley, and the symposium unfolds through the warm months, when working stone outdoors makes sense. Summer light on white marble, the sound of chisels across the Art Colony grounds, the slow emergence of form from block — the whole event has a workshop calm quite unlike a conventional exhibition.
Visitors can watch works take shape — dust, chisels and blocks of white stone under the open sky — and then see where they end up: the symposium has built a permanent sculpture park over its five decades, an outdoor museum that grows year by year. An artist residency hosts the invited sculptors during their stay.
The symposium is also a forum for ideas: in 2024 it convened the international conference "Contemporary Sculpture," gathering 17 sculptors and theorists from six countries. That mix of hands-on stone carving and critical discussion is rare anywhere, let alone in a small Montenegrin town.
For travellers, the appeal works on two timescales. During the symposium itself there is the live spectacle of sculptors at work in the open air, and conversations happen easily around the studios; at any other time of year the sculpture park remains, a permanent record of the editions that came before, free to wander whenever a journey brings you through the valley.
The symposium takes place annually through the summer, from July to the end of September, at the Art Colony complex in Danilovgrad. Attendance is free — both the open-air studios during the symposium and the sculpture park at any time of year.
