About the event

For two days each year, Bijelo Polje's city square becomes the meeting point of the Slow Food movement in the Western Balkans. The International Slow Food Fair grew out of the Slow Food convivium Bjelasica–Komovi–Prokletije, and is organized by the NGO "Kisjele vode" together with the Bijelo Polje tourism organization.

The setting suits the philosophy. Bijelo Polje lies on the Lim river beneath the pastures of Bjelasica, in a region where small mixed farms never disappeared and where cheese, honey and preserves are still made in family kitchens rather than factories. Slow Food here is not a revival — it is simply how the highlands have always eaten.

More than thirty Slow Food producers from across the region set out the goods that define the highland larder: cheeses from Bjelasica and the Pešter plateau, honey, preserves and traditional crafts. Everything on the stalls follows the Slow Food philosophy — local, traditional and made slowly, by small producers whose names you can learn at the stall.

Beyond the tasting and buying, the fair has a serious second life as a networking hub: producers, hosts and rural-tourism operators from across the Western Balkans use the two days to connect, compare and build the region's slow-travel offer. For visitors, that means the people behind the products are all in one square, happy to talk.

Visitors should budget time as well as appetite: every stall comes with a story, and the producers treat questions as a form of hospitality. September is also a fine season in the north, with the summer heat gone, the pastures still green and the market tables at their fullest.

The fair runs over two days on Bijelo Polje's city square and entry is free — come hungry and leave with a bag of mountain cheese.
