Theatre City Budva (Grad Teatar)
Grad Teatar — Theatre City — has turned Budva's Old Town into an open-air stage every summer since 1987, and 2026 brings its 40th, jubilee edition. The festival runs from 30 June to 23 August: 55 festival days carrying more than 68 programmes.
Budva by day is Montenegro's busiest beach town; Grad Teatar is its other identity. The Old Town — a small walled peninsula of stone lanes, churches and squares jutting into the sea — was made for open-air performance, and the festival has treated it as a stage since 1987: sets built between the churches, audiences filling Poets' Square, lights on the citadel walls.
The programme mixes theatre premieres with concerts, literature and visual arts, keeping the festival's founding idea — the town as theatre — intact after four decades. The 2026 jubilee edition compresses more than 68 programmes into 55 festival days, which in practice means something on the bill most evenings of high summer.
An evening at Grad Teatar has its own ritual: the walled town quietens after the beach day ends, the audience files through the stone gates, and a premiere plays under the open sky with the sea just beyond the walls. At night the stone squares fill with theatregoers — a scene that has defined Budva since the festival's first edition.
Forty seasons in, Grad Teatar remains the artistic core of Budva's summer, the counterpoint to the beach town by day. For visitors it is the reason an evening in Budva can be about theatre and art rather than nightlife — and the jubilee makes 2026 the year to catch it.
The 40th Grad Teatar runs 30 June – 23 August 2026 in Budva's Old Town, on stages between the churches, on Poets' Square and at the citadel. Headline shows are ticketed, while part of the programme is free.
