Day of Zeta Cakes and Priganice

The Day of Zeta Cakes and Priganice is the Zeta municipality's sweetest tradition, held in the second half of October. The 2023 edition took place on 22 October on Trg Anovi in Golubovci, while the 2024 edition moved to Plavnica.

Golubovci lies on the flat Zeta plain south of Podgorica, farming country where autumn is the season of gathering in. By the second half of October the summer heat is long gone and the light turns low and golden — exactly the weather in which a square full of hot fried dough makes perfect sense.

The stars are priganice: pillowy balls of fried dough served hot with honey and cheese, handed out free to visitors alongside tables of homemade cakes. The region's women's associations compete in a recipe contest, each presenting the baking traditions of their community, while folklore performances keep the gathering lively through the afternoon.

As evening falls the event shifts gear into a pop concert — Tropico Band headlined in 2023 and Jelena Karleuša in 2024 — turning a heritage food day into a full evening out. The event distils Zeta's identity: plain-spoken hospitality, recipes handed down generations, and a proper party to finish.

It is a day best approached with an appetite and no plan. Visitors drift between the tables, tasting as they go, watching the folklore groups and talking with the women whose recipes are on display; by nightfall the same square has turned into a concert crowd, and the sweetness of the afternoon gives way to singing.

The Day of Zeta Cakes and Priganice is held annually; this year's edition falls on 18 October on Trg Anovi in Golubovci, an easy trip from Podgorica. Everything, from the priganice to the concert, is free of charge.
