Orthodox Christmas 2027
Oak branch bonfires by the churches, liturgies and family gatherings – Orthodox Christmas in Montenegro, 6–7 January 2027.
The central tradition is the burning of the badnjak – oak branches – in front of churches on the evening of 6 January. Families bring their branches to the church fires, and the gatherings around the flames are as social as they are ritual: neighbours meet, greetings are exchanged, and people stay long after the branches burn down.

The evening continues with family gatherings at home, and on the morning of 7 January churches hold Christmas liturgies. For visitors, the rhythm of these two days is easy to follow – fires and crowds in the evening of the 6th, services and a quiet family day on the 7th.
Although the customs are preserved in every town and village, the scenes are most striking in front of the main temples, where the badnjak fires and crowds are the largest. Wherever you are staying in Montenegro at the beginning of January, the nearest larger church will have its own fire – and its own gathering around it.

What makes this observance unforgettable is that nothing is staged. This is a living tradition, not an event produced for an audience: fires are lit because they have always been lit, and visitors who come stand together with families who preserve a custom that defines the entire Montenegrin midwinter.
Christmas Eve and Christmas Day fall on 6 and 7 January every year, throughout Montenegro – in 2027 Christmas Eve is on Wednesday and Christmas Day on Thursday. Attendance is free and open to all; the evening of 6 January in front of a large church is the moment to plan around.
