Highlights

The Old Town of Ulcinj is one of the oldest settlements on the Adriatic coast and preserves traces of the many civilisations that shaped it over the centuries. Within its stone walls lie the remains of a palace, Balšić Tower, and a former slave market — a testament to a turbulent past in which enslaved people were brought from Africa and eventually became free citizens here. Narrow cobblestone streets wind through an authentic Mediterranean core full of ethno cafés and shops. The view from the walls over the open sea and surrounding beaches is one of the most beautiful sights on the Montenegrin coast.

Velika plaža (Great Beach) is the most famous beach in Ulcinj and one of the longest sandy beaches on the Mediterranean, stretching approximately 13 kilometres. Spacious and family-friendly, it offers excellent conditions for swimming, sailing, kayaking, and other water sports. Numerous campsites, restaurants, and equipment rental outlets are located along the beach, making it a fully equipped destination for a full day's stay. During the summer months it attracts large numbers of visitors from across the region and Europe.

Ada Bojana is a river island at the mouth of the Bojana River, a few kilometres south of Ulcinj, known for its unspoilt nature and distinctive atmosphere. The island is a popular destination for lovers of peace, nature, and fishing restaurants serving freshly prepared fish straight from the river. Ada Bojana also features beaches known for their tranquil surroundings, and part of the island is traditionally designated for nudism. Its proximity to Ulcinj makes it an easy and popular day trip for all visitors to this part of Montenegro.

Balšić Tower is one of the most recognisable historical symbols of Ulcinj, located within the walls of the Old Town. Named after the feudal Balšić family who ruled this part of the Adriatic in the Middle Ages, the tower bears witness to the strategic and military significance of Ulcinj throughout history. From its walls there are impressive views over the sea and surrounding beaches. A visit to the tower is part of every walk through the Old Town and an essential stop for history lovers and photographers.

Valdanos Cove is a peaceful and picturesque bay situated west of Ulcinj, surrounded by dense olive groves that are among the oldest on the Mediterranean. The cove is reached by a short drive from the centre of Ulcinj and rewards visitors with clear water, a quiet atmosphere, and natural shade. Due to its distance from the bustle of the city, Valdanos is ideal for those seeking a tranquil alternative to the popular town beaches. Organised excursions from Ulcinj often include a visit to this cove.
